Epifungium adgranulosum

Description:

Dimensions range from 19.5 mm - 19.5 mm high and 7 mm wide.
Width to height ratio: 0.36:1 ~ 0.36:1

Shell: elongate-conical; fragile; small. About 13.5 whorls, slightly convex; protoconch with 3.25-3.5 whorls sculptured with regularly spaced, very fine, incised, axial lines; teleoconch with ~10 whorls. Suture shallow. Umbilicate: very narrow or closed. Approximately 37 costae on the body whorl. Costae are orthocline, regularly placed, low costae. Costae usually discontinuous; touching the adjoining whorls. Intercostal spaces with very low, inconspicuous, spiral threads, randomly placed over each whorl, becoming more apparent on later whorls. Aperture subcircular. Operculum paucispiral, with, interconnected coils.


Distribution:

the Red Sea off Egypt, Maldives and Thailand to Indonesia.


Habitat:

3-18 m, always hosted by Fungia (Wellsofungia) granulosa Kluzinger, 1879 [Gittenberger & Gittenberger, 2005]


Etymology:

a reference to this species restricted habitat; it has been found on only one species of coral Fungia (Wellsofungia) granulosa Kluzinger, 1879
