Cirsotrema edgari

Description:

Dimensions range from 15 mm - 51 mm high and 5 mm - 19.5 mm wide.
Width to height ratio: 0.33:1 ~ 0.38:1

Shell: conical; thick and stout; small to medium. Exterior colour white, translucent. About 10 whorls; protoconch with ~1 whorls smooth, dark brownish-black; teleoconch with ~9 whorls gently convex. Suture fairly deep, partly hidden by small nodules of the ribs. Imperforate. Approximately 14 - 35 costae on the body whorl. Costae are oblique, closely spaced, moderately elevated, somewhat thick and wavy. Costae strongly angled at the shoulder. Intercostal spaces with numerous weak, sometimes obsolete spiral threads. Base body whorl forms distinct basal disc. Aperture porcelaneous white, ovate; peristome double; outer lip somewhat thickened formed by the last varix; inner lip very thin.

Kii Peninsula, Japan, off Taiwan, the Philippines [Brown & Neville, 2015]


Habitat:

200-400 m., sandy mud [Higo et al., 1999:176]

5. (DISCOSCALA) EDGAR de Boury, new species
(Plate VII, figures 2, 3)

Shell white, moderately solid, suitably translucent, imperforate, elongate-conical, ornamented with wavy longitudinal ribs and obsolete (faint) transverse threads; suture not raised, somewhat oblique, very deep but narrow, partly hidden by small nodules of the ribs.
Embryonic whorl: only 1 remains, smooth, dark brownish-black; the following 6½ whorls are gently convex, with very slightly oblique, closely spaced, moderately elevated, somewhat thick ribs, strongly wavy (crisped), expanded at the upper part, and with auriculate (ear-like) impressions.
Transverse threads broad and obsolete (faint): the last whorl is ornamented with 23 ribs, abruptly interrupted at the circumbasal thread; the base is somewhat oblique, bordered by a thread, with crowded, wavy concentric threads, and impressed with fine radial riblets; the columella is encircled by a very faint thread.
Aperture oval-subquadrate, edge very effuse (spread out):
peristome double; the inner lip is very thin; the outer peristome is somewhat thickened and formed by the last varix. The outer lip is slightly oblique.
Length: 15 mm; maximum diameter: 5 mm; maximum height of whorls: 7 mm.
Habitat - Macclesfield Bank, China Sea. Collected by M. Bassel Smith.
Type specimen: Collection of the British Natural History Museum, London.
[This bank is located between Tonkin and Luzon Island, at depths of 300 to 400 meters. Corals are abundant there, especially Lophohelia (Gravier).]
