Epitonium perimense

(Jousseaume, 1912)

Description:

Dimensions range from 5 mm - 5 mm high and 2 mm wide.
Width to height ratio: 0.4:1 ~ 0.4:1

Shell: elongated, conical shape has an oblique base; fairly solid, though occasionally thin; minute. Exterior colour white with a pale brown median band, this band is unstable and quickly fades on dead shells. About 9 whorls; protoconch with ~3 whorls smooth and horn-colored; teleoconch with 5-6 whorls. Suture deep. Umbilicate: umbilical slit that is partially obstructed by the columellar. Approximately 16 - 18 costae on the body whorl. Costae are slightly oblique, meeting at the suture roughly ribbed, membranous, barely prominent on the early whorls, increasing rapidly in size becoming thicker and rougher near the peristome. Costae forming longitudinal series, which sometimes lack regularity; Intercostal spaces No transverse striae are visible. Aperture obliquely oval; peristome thick peristome, which becomes thinner at the final whorl.

in relation to Perim, small volcanic island in the Bab el-Mandeb strait between Yemen and Djibouti where the shell was first collected
