Epitonium barissum
(Iredale, 1936)
Description:
Dimensions range from 16.59 mm - 20 mm high and 5.9 mm - 8 mm wide.
Width to height ratio: 0.36:1 ~ 0.4:1
Shell: slender, elegantly awl-shaped; light, thin; small. Exterior colour white to dirty white, greyish white. About 13 whorls, quite rounded, connected; protoconch with ~3 whorls elongate glassy whorls; teleoconch with ~10 whorls. Umbilicate: narrow but distinct, almost concealed by inner lip of aperture. Approximately 28 - 50 costae on the body whorl. Costae are low, delicate, some thickened and strong. Costae not peaked, but Weil et al. [1999:132] describe the species with small peaks below the suture ; some recurved; discontinuous. Intercostal spaces fine spiral threads. Interstices with approximately 20 spiral striae per whorl. Aperture ovate; peristome complete; outer lip with normal rib externally, thin; inner lip a little bit reflected, just joins the outerlip to complete the peristome. Operculum dark brown.
Distribution:
Northern Territory, Queensland, to Sydney Harbour New South Wales, Australia. Weil et al. (1999:132) extend the range to South Australia, however, Beechey [2008] comments there is no evidence for this.
