Epitonium avalites
(Jousseaume, 1912)
Description:
Dimensions range from 7 mm - 7.3 mm high and 3 mm wide.
Width to height ratio: 0.43:1 ~ 0.41:1
Shell: elongate-conical, turbinated; minute to small. Exterior colour white. About 9 whorls, almost disjointed; protoconch with ~3 whorls small, smooth, apex blunt; teleoconch with ~6 whorls. Suture deeply incised. Umbilicate: covered by columella edge. Approximately 17 costae on the body whorl. Costae are low costae. Costae some costae align with previous whorls, but not all; Intercostal spaces with fine thread-like striae. Columella straighter and thinner than the outer lip. Aperture round; peristome reflexed, slightly crenulated, angled near the suture.
Jousseaume [1912] notes that the ' shell, in both size and ornamentation, resembles Sc. amica; when viewed dorsally, distinguishing them would be difficult, but from the front, the umbilical slit and the absence of a funiculus doubling the columellar edge make confusion impossible'.
